My first impressions were this might be the album we’d have gotten if Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin did a lot of acid. There are a lot of jazz and indie vibes, and the whole thing comes across as really trippy. I often find ‘fusion’ bands like this tend to mash two styles together and call it a day; however, upon the second and third listen, you can see there is a lot more going on under the hood. Many of the songs combine multiple elements from different genres that add some spice and variety.
The standout tracks for me were “21c,” “I Deny Me,” and “Seed.” These had a mix of this classical jazz hall style mixed with some futuristic, spacey-sounding synths. I was imagining this is the sort of music they might have in a Star Trek future. I’ve seen in some interviews the band talks about this being a mix of futurism and nostalgia; stories about the future told 50 years in the past. I think these capture that best. There’s a lot said about self-discovery, journeys and wisdom passed to children.
Overall, I enjoyed this. It’s a bit out of my lane, so it won’t be joining any playlists but I can see some passion and talent went into this experience.
