Fontaines D.C. – Romance

Far from the rugged, raspy and punchy debut “Dogrel” in 2019, Fontaines D.C. have seemingly matured and transitioned into a bona-fide stand out post punk/indie outfit that is both innovative and exciting.

On first play I was taken aback by the melodic vocal harmonies and deep production expecting an album still containing a hint of the rawness of earlier releases. On second and third play however, I’m delighted that “Romance” has a whole new sound whilst remaining undoubtably Fontaines D.C.

Grian Chatten’s vocals are divine and the bands love of poetry and considered lyricism come through strong and captivating. The sweeping harmony on “In a Modern World” is a delight and octave range on “Here’s a Thing” is sublime.

There is a nu-metal edginess to “Starburster” (and a dollop of 2004 Kasabian too) and the catchy “Bug” takes me back further to the likes of Shed Seven (the Irish lads would probably hate me for that!)

Tricky to pick two standouts – all the tracks work for me and bring something new each time I listen.

It’s all quite a evolution from the shouty, direct lyrics “Dublin in the rain is mine, A pregnant city with a Catholic Mind” from the opening track on Dogrel and with Romance the boys have successfully carved out a new sonic experience for first time listeners and fans alike.

A solid 9/10
