Jesse Welles – Patchwork

I’ve seen Star Wars umpteen times since 1977 so I pretty much know what’s coming next. It felt a bit the same with this latest release Patchwork by Jesse Welles.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love Star Wars (the original of course) and I still quite like acoustic folk even if it sounds all too familiar.

Jesse Welles has the nuance of Dylan but with slightly more youthful tones of Jake Bugg at times. Patchwork is a blend of blues, folk and Americana and features strong lyricism and storytelling dealing with occasional dark themes and others less so.

I listen to most of my music in the car during my 20 minute commute each day and Patchwork doesn’t work for that. However, sit me in a bar with supplies of beer and bourbon and this really fits the bill!

I quite like this album… it does exactly what I thought it would, but it doesn’t really light my fire – it’s all bit whimsical and contrived. I might listen a few times more before archiving… Unlike Star Wars which is still excellent on viewing 50+ times.
