Tried so hard to engage with this album…but, it’s just not my thing. Musically intelligent but I will one of those few perhaps who just doesn’t care about a “pseudo-soul” vibe that lacks surprises. Given my own musical preferences perhaps its no surprise that Black Pumas mean little to me. Maybe I’m missing something, and a revisit in a few weeks might help – who knows!
I would go for “Angel” as a track I wouldn’t mind hearing more often (reminds me of Michael Kiwanuka a bit) but as for the others…
I’ll take it but leave it. 3/5
