English Teacher – This Could Be Texas

Right from the start, this debut album by English Teacher shouts originality and quality.  Well crafted and well produced, the indie-pop-rock guitar sounds, offbeat complex drum rhythms, and sublime vocals of Lily Fontaine, all combine to make one awesome record.

The songs are not just clever musical compositions, they have something to say about politics, the state of life in Britain, equality (or the lack of it), and with a bit of fantasy and poetry thrown in for good measure.

It’s the sort of album that grows on you each time you listen, and indeed it did take me a few listens to fully appreciate the musicianship, artistry and lyrics.  Initially my stand out tracks were R&B, Nearly Daffodils and The World’s Biggest Paving Slab (the ‘singles’) but in truth this is an album that demands you listen to it all, and as you do you’ll discover something new each time and different favourites will emerge. I’ve already changed my mind on mine!

Worthy winners of the 2024 Mercury Prize.  9/10.
