Black Pumas – Chronicles of a Diamond

With a music references going back over 50 years it was a treat to listen to a full album from the Black Pumas. Immediately strands of anything from Marvin Gaye to Prince entered my ears. No criticism from me about that!

Opening track of More than a Love Song gives you that New York feel of ‘In the City’ by Stevie Wonder and listening to it on a sunny day definitely enhanced my feel for the song. Not so sure of Ice Cream but the next 3 tracks ran from soul to gospel to the funk of Sauvignon interspersed with the simplicity of the acoustic guitar and vocal performance of Angel.

Inevitably when you listen to a complete album (which streaming means we rarely do) there are some fillers in there such as Rock and Roll but overall I enjoyed the varying musical and vocal styles and can see why they playing the Royal Albert Hall later in the year.

A good entry point for me – a solid 8/10
